Fast facts

  • Known as the Garden Village, because of its fine gardens and grand homes
  • Considered the most sophisticated and urbane village in the Blue Mountains
  • 109 km west of Sydney, population 3,750

Why go there

Enjoy the magic of the Blue Mountains – crisp mountain air and scenic natural beauty – and eat well in specialty gourmet shops and bakeries as well as fine cafés and restaurants.

Leura's pretty tree-lined main street  is great for wandering and people watching. Stroll through the village and browse fashion boutiques and bric-a-brac stores. There is also a number of galleries and bookstores as well as lovely parks and gardens to enjoy.

History

The railway station opened at Leura in 1891 to service a small and sparsely inhabited village.

With the building of the first guesthouse, The Coffee Palace, tourism started to develop and the township started to attract notable Sydney businessmen who built expansive weekenders and holiday homes there.
